Malala Yousafzai.....a HERO for all girls

Today is the first International Day of the Girl and Care.org is calling for a Day of Action to help end Child Marriage.  Read my post on how you can help.

But today I'm sad, angry and frustrated.  On this day the first International Day of the Girl, a young Pakistani girl, Malala Yousafzai,  is struggling for her life.  Why, because she was hunted down and shot on October 9, by the Taliban since she was an outspoken advocate for an education for herself and other girls.

Aleem Maqbool, a BBC correspondent in Pakistan, reported on Twitter that he had asked the Taliban militants to clarify their position on killing women, given that they had previously described it as haram, or sinful, for Muslims. A spokesman for the group replied that Malala “had harmed the mujahideen by her words. We held a shura and declared killing her was allowed in Islam.”

This brave young girl is 14 years old, and the Taliban sought out to murder her because for something as simple, to you and me, as an education.

Watch this 2011 interview where she talks about how she started writing down her frustrations on not being able to go to school, and  her hopes to study politics so that she can help her country.

I'm amazed by her eloquence and poise.  Malala speaks beyond her  years. Would my own girls be so outspoken if an education were denied them?  To what lengths would they go to obtain that sought after education?

This girl is a hero for all girls. Please keep her in your prayers.

Carolina, Thanks so much for posting this story. It is heartbreaking and Malala's words are inspiring. It will give me a great deal of pause and cause for both grief and gratitude as I go through the day.

Such a sad story and appaling. I can't image someone would gun down a kid for wanting an education. The kids here in the country sometimes education for granted, and here someone is shot for wanting it. I will look up that organization you mentioned. I know I want to look up the one founded by a woman who takes on women's issues globally. I saw her on Oprah and realize that I need to participate in something in change is going to come about. Praying for her and her family and others like her suffering. Visiting from the link party.

Sometimes I forget how blessed I am to be in a country that allows education for all.

Poor Malala :(

This is horrific and sad. How terrible to be shot for simply wanting an education!
