Knitting cables without a cable needle

Have any of you knitted cables without a cable needle?  I tried it recently with a pattern that I’m designing for my daughter.  It’s a scarf with cables and lace.  I found some great tutorials online.  Here is one.  Try it!  I found it a little tricky at first, but less cumbersome…and I didn’t lose the needle every time I put it down!
